Rereading your notes the night before a test feels safe. Active recall feels awkward. Decades of memory research say the awkward version is what sticks when the exam actually arrives.
Active recall (also called retrieval practice) means you try to pull an answer out of your head before you look it up. Close the book. Cover the page. Answer a question. Write a definition from memory. Explain a process out loud. Then check.
Rereading is the opposite: you keep the answer in front of you and hope familiarity turns into knowledge. Highlighting and “looking over” notes usually fall into the same bucket. They lower anxiety quickly. They do not force your brain to reconstruct the idea.
That reconstruction is the point. When you retrieve something, you are not just checking whether you know it, you are strengthening the pathway that lets you find it again later. That is why a practice quiz can teach more than another pass through the chapter, even when the quiz feels harder in the moment.
In a classic set of experiments, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke had students study short prose passages and then either restudy the material or take free-recall tests with no feedback. On a test given five minutes later, restudying looked fine, sometimes better. On delayed tests two days or a week later, prior testing produced substantially greater retention. Students who restudied also felt more confident that they would remember the material, even when their later scores said otherwise. The paper is “Test-Enhanced Learning” in Psychological Science (2006).
A related Science study by Karpicke and Roediger pushed the idea further with vocabulary learning: once an item was learned, more studying without testing added little for delayed recall, while repeated testing produced a large benefit. In 2013, Dunlosky and colleagues reviewed ten common study techniques for educators and students. Practice testing and distributed practice earned high-utility ratings; rereading and highlighting did not. The full monograph, Improving Students’ Learning With Effective Learning Techniques , is still one of the clearest “stop wasting hours on the wrong methods” documents available.
The pattern that matters for exam week: short-term fluency is a trap. Feeling fluent after rereading is not the same as being able to produce the answer under time pressure.
Because rereading is low friction. You sit down, open the packet, and the words look familiar. Your brain rewards that familiarity with a sense of progress. Retrieval does the opposite: blank pages, wrong guesses, and the urge to peek. That discomfort is useful information. It shows you what you cannot yet produce.
The fix is not to “try harder” with the same habit. It is to redesign the session so retrieval is the default and rereading is the check, not the main event.
Assume you have five days before a big test and a pile of chapters, slides, and handwritten notes. You do not need a perfect Anki deck. You need a schedule that forces retrieval every day and leaves time to fix weak spots.
Day −5: Map, don’t memorize
Skim once with a blank checklist: list topics, not sentences. For biology that might be “mitosis stages,” “meiosis differences,” “cancer checkpoints.” For history: “causes,” “turning points,” “consequences.” Stop when you have a one-page outline of what the exam can ask. This pass is orientation, not learning.
Day −4 and −3: Closed-book blocks
For each topic on the map, set a 20-25 minute timer. Phone face-down. Write or speak everything you can about that topic without looking. When the timer ends, open the source and mark gaps in a different color. Then ask yourself three questions you failed to answer and write them on a separate “must quiz” list.
Two or three topics per session is enough. Cramming ten topics into one sitting recreates the rereading trap: you skim everything and retrieve nothing.
Day −2: Mixed practice
Shuffle topics. Do not study “all of chapter 4, then all of chapter 5.” Interleave: one question from chapter 4, one from 5, one from the lab handout. Mixing feels messier; it also trains you to pick the right idea when the exam jumps around. Dunlosky’s review treats interleaved practice as promising for exactly this reason.
Day −1: Full retrieval pass + light review
Run a mock exam or a long quiz set under timed conditions. Grade it. Reread only the pages tied to misses. Sleep. Last-minute whole-chapter rereads usually steal sleep and inflate confidence without fixing the holes you already found.
Exam morning: cues, not chapters
Glance at your gap list and a handful of definitions you keep missing. Do not open a new chapter “just in case.” Your job is to warm up retrieval, not restart encoding.
- Counts: free recall on a blank page, flashcards you answer before flipping, explaining a process to a friend without notes, ABCD quizzes you answer before checking, past papers under time.
- Doesn’t count much: rereading highlighted lines, watching a summary video while scrolling, copying notes neatly, “looking over” slides while listening to music.
Multiple-choice is still retrieval if you commit to an answer before peeking. It is weaker than free recall for some materials, but it is far stronger than passive reading, and it matches how many school tests are written. Use free recall for big ideas; use ABCD for dense fact sets and exam format practice.
Peeking too early. If you flip the card after two seconds of mild confusion, you turn retrieval into recognition. Sit with the blank for a few seconds. Guess if you must. Then check.
Only easy questions. If every quiz item feels comfortable, you are rehearsing what you already know. Add items from yesterday’s gap list.
No correction loop. Retrieval without checking wrong answers can lock in errors. Always verify. Write the correct version once in your own words.
One giant night. Distributed practice (spreading sessions across days) is the other high-utility technique in the Dunlosky review. Four short retrieval sessions beat one heroic six-hour reread.
